Instagram Post Dimensions: The Complete 2026 Size Guide

The standard Instagram post dimensions are 1080 pixels wide, with heights varying by aspect ratio: 1080×1080 px for square (1:1), 1080×1350 px for portrait (4:5), 1080×1440 px for tall portrait (3:4), and 1080×566 px for landscape (1.91:1). Instagram will resize your photo to a width of 320 pixels if you upload a lower resolution image, and it will downsize higher resolution images to 1080 pixels wide. For the best quality, upload images at 1080 pixels wide in one of these supported aspect ratios.

Instagram supports aspect ratios from 1.91:1 (landscape) to 3:4 (portrait) for feed posts. The platform now displays profile grid previews in a taller 3:4 shape, so a 3:4 post aligns closely with the grid thumbnail. However, 4:5 remains a strong default because it occupies generous vertical space and works reliably across organic posts and ad placements. Square posts are still supported but occupy less of the grid tile.

Feed Post Dimensions by Aspect Ratio

Instagram accepts three main aspect ratios for feed posts: square (1:1), portrait (4:5 or 3:4), and landscape (1.91:1). The table below summarizes the recommended pixel dimensions for each.

Aspect RatioRecommended Dimensions (px)Best Use
Square (1:1)1080 × 1080Classic posts, product images, reusable tiles
Portrait (4:5)1080 × 1350Maximizes vertical space, ideal for mobile viewing
Tall Portrait (3:4)1080 × 1440Matches current profile grid preview
Landscape (1.91:1)1080 × 566Wide scenes, horizontal graphics

For portrait posts, choose 4:5 at 1080×1350 px for a dependable feed post. Choose 3:4 at 1080×1440 px when you want the uploaded artwork to align closely with the current grid thumbnail. Keep the headline, logo, faces, and call to action near the center so the composition survives previews and placements.

Square posts remain valid and useful for reusable tiles, simple product images, and established templates. They no longer fill the full height of the portrait profile grid, so preview the result before publishing a carefully connected grid.

Use the 1.91:1 landscape format for wide scenes and horizontal graphics. It takes up less vertical feed space, which makes clear hierarchy and readable text especially important.

Stories and Reels Dimensions

Instagram Stories and Reels both use a 1080×1920 pixel canvas at a 9:16 aspect ratio. This vertical format fills the entire phone screen. Interface elements occupy space near the top and bottom, so place essential copy and logos inside the central area. Always preview captions, account information, buttons, and Reel controls on a phone before publishing.

For Reels, the feed preview is commonly shown in a shorter portrait crop, so keep critical content centered. For Stories, leave generous clear space at the top and bottom to avoid overlap with the UI.

Carousel Post Dimensions

Use one aspect ratio throughout a carousel. The first selected item establishes the presentation for the set, and inconsistent source ratios may be cropped. Build every slide on the same canvas and keep recurring elements in consistent positions. For example, if you choose 4:5, make all slides 1080×1350 px.

Profile Image and Highlight Cover Dimensions

Upload a profile image at 320×320 pixels and keep the subject or logo centered because Instagram displays it as a circle. For Highlight covers, work on a 1080×1920 px Story canvas and place a simple icon in the center. Fine text and detailed marks become unreadable at profile size.

Best Practices for Uploading

Instagram's help documentation states that if you share a photo at a lower resolution, it is enlarged to a width of 320 pixels. If you share a photo at a higher resolution, it is sized down to a width of 1080 pixels. Therefore, uploading at 1080 pixels wide ensures the best quality.
